Bikes

They're all over the place (kind of), no they're really not but many cities and towns embrace this means of transportation. Looks like my beloved home town is TRYING to take this good ol' idea under it's wings.
Councilman Pushes to Make LA More Bike Friendly
Here's my future bike....
Naturally, it's laying out by the beach. True California beach cruiser status.

Bicycling in Oregon
Green transportation and all. Portland, Oregon has become a model for plenty of other cities in their approach to planning and being "green". There's even a whole section online with The Oregonian dedicated to talk and news about bicycling! The state has it's own "world-renowned" Coastal Scenic Bike Route that offers a clean-air adventure for enthusiasts.

Recumbent Bikes - LA TIMES
Here's an interesting alternative to the standard recreational or mountain bike. Shall we be seeing more of these around? Los Angeles Times' Blogger and Editor of the Health Section, Tami Dennis, explains how this unconventional bike might become a popular way of "hitting the road". Personally, I'd be terrified of maneuvering this thing in L.A. traffic. However, I'm sure Dennis doesn't necessarily suggest using the recumbent bike in such dense traffic, though it might be a thought.

Park Ave. Goes Pedestrian - Next American City
New York going big with this attempt in closing down Park Ave. and a few other highly-trafficked streets to go pedestrian friendly for a few hours (7am-1pm) on August 9, 16, and 23. This means an increase in business sales with surrounding stores, and will become an inviting space not only for pedestrians but for bicyclers who have been turned off by the dense presence of huge rubber taxi tires emitting their junk into the air.
