UC and Cal State warn that fees may increase
If you 're a California State resident and were thinking about going to any UC or Cal State, this definitely affects you. Larry Gordon of L.A. Times writes about the high possibility of 9.4% fee increases within the UC school system, and a 10% increase with Cal State schools - all caused by California's "budget situation". The Cal State schools are looking for tax state funding, but only if it is past through the State and this would only be for the school year of '09-'10. This would call for nearly $10,000 extra coming from the undergraduate students, excluding housing and books. Grad-schools would raise even more steeply. Gordon notes that this would be a great struggle for thosee students who cannot afford such expensives due to the nation's own finicial crisis. It would lead to an attempted resolution in limiting admission on certain campuses, and trying to fill-in spaces on campuses with more housing, and admission slots such as UC Riverside and Merced.

Now in Sight: Far-off Planets
Denis Overbye writes about the discovery of these two astronomers, Dr. Marois and Dr. Kalas, who have found what they believe to be new planets revolving around stars in the midst of the universe. The article states that more than 300 so-called extrasolar planets have been spotted circling distant stars. What is the significance to everyone else, not interested in the celebrity-like stars out in the universe? It means that there is a wider opportunity for astronomers and scientists like Dr. Marois and Kalas to use the spectrospocic observations to study and determine the temperature, composition and other objective information of other planets and their relationships.
